It is always wonderful to hear about something new created by South Africans in South Africa. The Passengers is a story based right here in South Africa, with great local characters and recognisable landmarks.
Created by Marc Dey, with original art by Anthony Hodge, The Passengers is a superhero story with a difference: a dark and twisty tale set in urban South Africa, with nary a spandex suit in sight. In turns frightening and witty, the writing and art bring the characters alive and hint at a massive over-arching mythology that appears wholly original and whets the readers’ appetite for further exploration. The introduction of the setting and characters suggest a carefully crafted universe that is familiar enough to lull the reader into a false sense of security, before yanking the rug out from beneath your feet as malevolent forces storm into the story.
Launched in May of this year, The Passengers has received a warm welcome: one reviewer described it as “a dark urban fantasy set in our own South Africa, but which weaves storytelling and artistry on an international level in terms of quality”.
